On C-E Translation Of Economic News From Functional Equivalence Perspective

In contemporary world, as information changing frequently, newspaperbecomes an indispensable part of daily lives, as well as an effective tool of publicity.After the implementation of economic reform and opening up policy, China is nolonger a mystery to the Westerners, but an influential figure which is a veryimportant part in the world. Therefore, Chinese to English (C-E) translation ofeconomic news, a kind of foreign publicity materials translation, has offered greatopportunities for international community. While although the important role thattranslated economic news plays, the C-E translation of the economic news has agreat number of requirements, such as prompt, accurate, vivid, readable, attractive,etc, which are hard to achieve. In addition, it is well acknowledged that translationstrategies vary with the style of texts in different contexts, so in order to reachparticular aims through translated economic news, a certain kind of translationtheories are needed.This thesis argues that Nida’s functional equivalence (FE) theory is the mostappropriate translation strategy for C-E translation of economic news. First, thethesis makes an overall study of economic news, including its origin, characteristicsand functions of economic news. Then, Nida’s functional equivalence theory isillustrated systematically, of which the reader’s response serves as the mostimportant part in translating. Although, the field of C-E translation of economicnews has been researched by many scholars, the most suitable translation strategy orthe evaluation standards of such translation has been touched upon less thannecessary. Hence, the previous studies and the present application situations arediscussed. The author then tries to find out the existed problems of C-E translation ofeconomic news and discusses them from the perspective of Nida’s FunctionalEquivalence theory, with the hope to find out the most effective translation strategyat last. Through thorough analysis of the features of economic news and the problemsin translated versions, the author proposed that Nida’s functional equivalence theory,especially the readers’ response is the most appropriate strategy and evaluationstandard for C-E translation of economic news. In accordance with the requirementsof FE theory and the aims of economic news, three means, including amplification,simplification and interpretation, are widely used in translation of economic news.It is sincerely hoped that this thesis will enlighten translators when dealing withC-E translation of economic news and make a little contribution to the progressionof the researches in this field, although some new ideas have been raised and a littleimprovement has been made, there’s much left to be completed and perfected.
