A Practice Report On Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreating Of Long Sentence Strategies Application In A Case Stuty Of 9^th Central China Expo

As one of the most common interpretation types,consecutive interpreting has been widely applied in important occasions concerning foreign affairs.In speech of foreign affair occasions,there are usually many Chinese long sentences.Overall quality of consecutive interpreting can be directly influenced by how accurately Chinese long sentences are interpreted into English.This practice report focuses on interpretation of Chinese long sentences.The paper takes speeches from the 9th Expo Central China Opening Ceremony as corpus for simulated consecutive interpreting.According to substantive Chinese long sentences in interpreting practice,the paper discusses interpreting strategies for Chinese long sentences under the guidance of interpretive theory.Difficulties in interpreting mainly involve structures and features of Chinese long sentences,namely various modifiers,complex coordinate clauses,and complicated language structure.By combining interpretive theory,the report comes up with solutions including linearity,connection and combination,splitting and reorganization.Linearity is mainly applicable for Chinese long sentences with unified subjects but various modifiers.Chinese long sentences can be transferred into English according to logic order and semantic structure within sentences.Connection and combination is suitable to handle coordination components in Chinese long sentences.According to parataxis of Chinese,combination can help to sort out logic relationships between sentences and add some proper correlatives.Splitting and reorganization can be applied to deal with Chinese long sentences with complicated language structure.These Chinese long sentences usually contain multiple subject-predicate structures.Thus,they need to be split and reorganized to determine the sense groups so as to realize perfect interpretation into target language.From case analysis,it can be seen that the above solutions are of instruction and practice value for consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English.
