This report selects the documentary Meet the Chinese Characters broadcast by China Central Television.It is a simulated Chinese-English interpreting practice guided by the Interpretive Theory.Each five-minute episode is in line with the current trend of short videos.It shows the Chinese characters to the world and enables the audience to know the characters from a new perspective.The characteristics of the source language are mainly reflected in culture-loaded words,ancient historical events,and technical terms,etc.Therefore,it is necessary to choose appropriate interpreting strategies and methods during interpreting practice.The Interpretive Theory holds that an interpreting process is a communicative act.It doesn’t focus on word correspondence,but on achieving equivalence to the meaning of the source language.Due to the differences and expression habits between Chinese and English,the interpreter should not stick to the language form of the source language,but should attach great importance to the extraction of meaning,which conforms to the view of “deverbalization” emphasized by the the Interpretive Theory.Guided by this theory,the interpreter focuses upon its core principle: comprehension,deverbalization,and re-expression.It requires the interpreter to find corresponding interpreting strategies to solve problems.The interpreter has adopted several strategies: paraphrasing,simplification,amplification and conversion to clearly express the source language.This report hopes to further apply this theory to interpreting practice through a summary of interpreting strategies,hoping to help the field of documentary interpreting in the future and contributing to the development of Chinese characters.
