The Translation Report Of Contract Law(Chapter 19-21):The Translation Of Lexical Gap

Lexical gap is also called “lexical vacancy” or “lexical contradiction”. Lexical gap is a kind of language phenomenon which expresses some specific things or concepts that cannot be found in another language. This report mainly illustrates the methods of dealing with lexical gaps in chapter 19-21 of Contract Law.Translation as a language bridge that connects different cultures should constantly express the differences of cultures by filling the lexical gap. In the translation of contract law, appropriate translation of lexical gap is very important to the target text. The author tries to solve the problem of translation of lexical gap from the following aspects. Firstly the author introduces the classifications of lexical gaps and analyzes the reasons for its existence. Then, the author discusses three translation methods of lexical gaps in Contract Law(chapter 19-21): literal translation, annotation and transliteration. Finally, the author makes the conclusion and summarizes the lessons learned in the translation process. Thus, the translation of lexical gap requires the translators to know its classifications and culture embodied in the lexical gap and to employ appropriate translation methods so as to make the translated version more proper.
