| The thesis is a report on translation of the instruction manuals for separator, which is an equipment specializing in industrial classification. The translation program was commissioned by Mianyang Seeker Science & Technology Development Co., Ltd. The source texts include 9 manuals for 9 separators of different models.Due to the massive use of terminologies and theories about mechanical engineering and technical operation included, the translation is obviously pragmatic translation. In terms of textual features, sentences in the source texts are mainly simple sentences or simple sentences with long and complicated attributive or adverbial. Subjectless imperative sentence is commonly seen in the source texts, which is a reflection of manual text's nature. Such a text type requires the translation to be concise,accurate(especially of the terminologies) and easy for target audience's perception on account of its textual features and objective.The guidance of "skopostheory" and Nord's "loyalty principle" are dominant in translating the manuals. The skopos rule, the fidelity rule and the coherence rule are three major principles the translator adhered to throughout the program. Before setting about the translation, the learning of relevant professional knowledge about separator and revisions made to the source text with the commissioner's approval are carried out.During the translation, the translator took the target audience as the core of the translation activity and endeavor to convey the full meaning in concisest language through using diversified translation strategies such as vocational domestication and functional domestication, preference over strong verbs in non-literary translation,nominalization in scientific English and clarifying translation. Enormous efforts had been made to address the key issues including representation of textual features in target text, accurate translation of terminology and target audience's fluent understanding. |
