| Based on the author’s own translation practice of the Instruction Manual for Communications Receiver Icom IC-R20, an assignment commissioned by a technology company in Nanjing, this report presents the textual features of the source text, the translational challenges it exposes on the translator, and translational actions taken to tackle the problems under the general theoretical guidance of the skopos theory. The features of technical texts and the skopos of technical translation determine that literal translation should be used alongside free translation to devise a functionally equivalent and thus user-friendly target text. The report starts with a textual analysis of technical text, followed by a detailed discussion on the challenges and solutions of the typical textual examples at both lexical and syntactic levels, including terminology, false friends, passive voice, and imperative sentences. The report concludes with my personal reflection upon my translation practice in the hope of furnishing fellow technical translators with some useful insights. |
