| This report is about the translation of sixth chapter “Is Liberal Democracy the Solution to Terrorism or Is It Part of the Problem?” of the book “Global Alert: The Rationality of Modern Islamist Terrorism and the Challenge to the Liberal Democratic World”, which is written by Boaz Ganor. In this accessible and compelling book, Global Alert debunks this myth by anatomizing the rationale behind modern terrorism. It draws a distinct picture of its root and instrumental causes and the different stages of a terrorist attack, from indoctrination and recruitment to planning, preparation, and launch. Boaz Ganor shows how terrorist organizations exploit these values to paralyze or neutralize the states they oppose. Terrorism is the most dangerous threat faced by modern humanity, and is also one of the key factors that have shaped modern politics and society. To help Chinese readers better understand the book, the translator tries to use plain Chinese and avoid obscure languages, following the principles of Functional Equivalence Theory. The report is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction of the translation project, including its background, significance and the layout. The second part is a brief introduction of Boaz Ganor as well as the main contents and features of the book. The third part explains the concept of Functional Equivalence Theory and its translation methods. The fourth part discusses the difficulties in translating, and corresponding solutions and translation methods employed in the project, such as diction, addition and omission, division and combination. The fifth part is the conclusion, which sums up the experience and lessons drawn from the project, and mentions some problems in the translation that are still to be solved. |
