This report is excerpted from the second chapter “Causation†of the original book “Modern War: A Very Short Introductionâ€, which is written by Richard English. In this accessible and compelling book, Richard English explores the assumptions we make about modern warfare and considers them against the backdrop of their respective historical reality. Warfare is the most dangerous threat faced by modern humanity, and is also one of the key factors that have shaped the modern politics and society. To make it more comprehensible and understandable to readers, the translator tries to use plain Chinese and avoids obscure languages, which follows the three principles of Skopos theory. The report is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction of the translation project, including its background, significance and the layout. The second part is a brief introduction of Richard English as well as the main contents and features of the book. The third part explains the concept of Skopos theory and its translation methods. The fourth part discusses the difficulties in translating, corresponding solutions and translation methods employed in the project, such as diction, addition and omission, division and combination. The fifth part is the conclusion, which sums up the experience and lessons drawn from the project, and mentions some problems in translation still to be solved. |
