Popular science is the combination of science and literature. When translating popular science, we need to respect the basic scientific facts as well as preserve the literary grace. In addition, in order to make popular science and its scientific knowledge accessible to all possible readers, the translated version should be written in an accurate and clear language. Due to differences between Chinese and English, translators need to make some adjustments to the source text by adopting certain translation methods and strategies. That is to say, it is inevitable that translators have to make adaptations and selections during the translation process.Eco-translatology is an ecological approach to translation studies. It is developed by Hu Gengshen on the basis of his theory of adaptation and selection. By introducing Darwin's theory of natural selection into translation studies, he interprets and analyzes translational eco-environment and translation process from an ecological perspective. Translators always need to make selections to adapt to certain translational environment. Popular science is especially suitable for doing translation process analysis as it has dual stylistic features. From the perspective of eco-translatology, I analyzed my own translation process based on my translation practice - Life in the soil. I explained what kinds of translation methods and strategies I've chosen when met with difficulties or challenges in the translation process and why I made such selections. I paid more attention to translator's motivation of applying any translation strategies to produce a target text rather than the target text itself.
