In the early period of construction of the People’s Republic of China, the foreign translation took on the responsibility of establishing a new image of the country and transmitting the country’s political culture,in which Yang Hsienyi and Gladys Yang were the most representative and outstanding translators.Wang Kuei and Li Hsiang-Hsiang is the first long narrative poem translated on Chinese Literature(English Version)after the founding of New China by Yangs and it is loved by readers in especial translational ecoenvironment.Eco-translatology is a self-contained and systematic translation theory put forward by Professor Hu Gengsheng. The concepts of “natural selection” and “survival of the fittest” into translations are introduced, thus providing a new interdisciplinary perspective on translation studies. In this article, the adaptability and three-dimensional adaptive selection of the Yangs in Wang Kuei and Li Hsiang-Hsiang were explored from the perspective of eco-translation.It is found that Chinese translational eco-environment had changed a lot in the early period of new China construction because of the special political environment, and the Yangs have adapted to such eco-environment in multi-dimension and successfully realize the purpose of foreign translation. The English translation of Wang Kuei and Li HsiangHsiang not only meets the needs of propaganda, but also fit in with the three-dimensional adaptive selection. In the language dimension,it continues the plain and straightforward writing style of the original poem and faithfully restores the language style of the main characters in the poem;in the cultural dimension,it remains the image of the source culture and adds notes to the content that target readers may not understand;in the communicative dimension,it transmits the revolutionary thought and spirit of the original poem, highlighting the theme of “revolution”. |
