A Report On The Translation Of Journey To The Stars (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Eco-translatology

This translation practice’s original text is excerpted from chapter four of the science fiction Journey to the Stars by Alwyn Dow.The excerpts mainly tell a series of stories about Kiwi Grant and Duke Morton during their mission in New Zealand from Kiwi’s perspective.The excerpts are the novel’s climax,rich in content and diverse in language,fully showing science fiction’s typical features.Eco-translatology can be applied to this kind of novel and meet the translator’s expectations.Therefore,the translator has adopted the theory in this translation practice.Eco-translatology is one of the modern translation theories instructive in literary translation and science fiction translation.Under the guidance of Eco-translatology,the translator has made selective adaptations to the main translational eco-environment and made adaptive selections in linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions.The translator has striven to restore the scientificity,popularity,literariness of the original text to the maximum extent.Thus,the translation can adapt to the corresponding translational eco-environment and meet domestic readers’ expectations for foreign science fiction.The translator’s adaptations and selections are the focus of this report.In the linguistic dimension,the translator mainly uses inversion and division to make the translation more in line with the target language’s linguistic rules.In the cultural dimension,the translator chiefly uses annotation and replacement to properly deal with the culture-related content in the original text.In the communicative dimension,the translator mainly uses amplification,free translation,and conversion to make the translation more vivid and expressive.Finally,the translator summarizes the translation practice,points out the translation practice’s limitations,and puts forward some suggestions for future translation practice and translation studies.
