Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop the reliability of a survey of nurses for preventing urinary tract infections(CAUTI)based on the “Knowledge, attitude and Practice” theory, and investigated nurses at the tertiary general hospitals in Gansu Province.Through the survey,we can know the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of nurses, and find out the relevence between the different characteristics of nursing staff and the survey results.Meanwhile we can explore the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of nurses in preventing CAUTI,and know related knowledge sources and needs for nurses. This Cross-sectional survey assists with identifying knowledge and helping hospital administrators to customize education and training. Methods: This study developed a primitive questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes and practices of nurses for preventing CAUTI via expert consultation and nurses' interviews. We developed the final questionnaire through the reliability and validity analysis the result of preliminarily survey included 248 nurses from a tertiary genera hospital in Lanzhou City. The final survey questionnaire included three parts:(1)Basic information questionnaires for nurses;(2)questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes and practices of nurses for preventing CAUTI tested by the reliability and validity;(3)Knowledge sources and demand questionnaires for nurses.A total of 377 nursing staff from three of the the tertiary general hospitals in the city of Lanzhou were formally surveyed via a method of convenience sampling. The data obtained was processed by SPSS 24.0.The scores of the different dimensions of the knowledge attitude and practice of nurses were used to describe statistics. The correlation between the characteristics of nursing staff and the achievement of knowledge attitude and practice was to measure by using the ANOVA and Schefee method. The relevance analysis between the knowledge, attitude and behavior of nursing staff was performed by using the path analysis.Nurse' knowledge sources and needs were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results: The KMO value of the pre-survey questionnaire was 0.863,the chi-square value of the Bartlett's spherical test was 3697.868(degree of freedom was 528),and the alpha coefficient of the total questionnaire was 0.888.The scores of the different dimensions of the nurses who were formally surveyed were: the basic theoretical score of CAUTI was 2.03±1.04;the relevant knowledge score of the extracted catheter was 2.71±0.86;the catheter fixation and treatment knowledge score was 2.94±0.26;The attitude score for prevention of CAUTI was 22.27±2.34;the score for nursing staff behavior was 39.13±4.48.There was difference in knowledge score of the nurses in different departments(P = 0.01);There was difference in attitude scare of nurses in different genders(P =0.012);There was difference in practice of nursing staff in different ages, departments, professional titles, and working years(P =0.012,P =0.001,P =0.01,P =0.01).The results of Road King's analysis show that the path coefficients of attitudes, departmental and knowledge-to-behavior respectively are 0.197,0.122,and 0.099;the path coefficients of behavior and the department-to-knowledge are 0.108 and 0.124;the road-strength factor of behavior-to-attitude is 0.213.The nurses' knowledge needs and source analysis results show that: 53.1% of nursing staff think that the relevant knowledge they have learned in school can't meet the clinical needs,30.5% of nursing staff have never attended any related knowledge lectures;45.6% of nurses don't know the new advance about CAUTI.Conclusions: 1.The questionnaire about knowledge attitude and practive of nurses for prevention catheter-related urinary tract infection has a good reliability and validity, and can be used as a test tool for clinical nursing staff.2.The nursing staff of the tertiary general hospitals in Gansu Province had good attitudes and behaviors in preventing CAUTI,but the basic theory and definition of knowledge were not enough.3.Nursing staff in different departments differ in their knowledge level.Nursing staff of different genders have different attitudes.Nursing personnel of different ages, departments, professional titles and working years have differences in behavior, and urology and ICU are best departments on knowledge, attitude and behavior of preventing Urinary catheter related urinary tract infection.4.The knowledge and attitudes of nursing staff in preventing catheter-related urinary tract infections affect nursing behaviors.Contrarily, the behaviors also directly affect the knowledge and attitudes of nursing staff.5.It is necessary to provide relevant training and education for nursing staff. The contents of the training primarily include medical search, prevention of new advances in CAUTI.
