Objectives Colorectal cancer is the most common malignancy tumor. In all malignancies, its incidence is third, and mortality is fourth.A variety of pathological and environmental factors have an important impact on the occurrence and prognosis of colorectal cancer. The occurrence and development of colorectal cancer is a complicated dynamic process with many reported risk factors, and one of the established risk factors for colorectal cancer developments is metabolic syndrome(MS).But there is still lack of research on the relationship between MS and colorectal cancer prognosis. In this study, the relationship between MS and the prognosis of colorectal cancer was analyzed by SEER-Medicare database and clinical data collected in hospital. Methods: Part 1: The patients with colorectal cancer from 1998 to 2007 were enrolled from the SEER-Medicare data, and all subjects have complete case data. The general characteristics, disease information, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis information were obtained through further data collection.Part 2: We collected 4276 patients with colorectal cancer who were treated at XX hospital from 1998 to 2007.By the case query system of hospital,we checked the basic information, pathological information and biochemical examination indicators of colorectal cancer patients when they were diagnosed with colorectal cancer at first time.By the follow-up case data,we obtained the treatment plan, overall survival(OS),progression free survival(PFS)of subjects. All of data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0.Results Part 1: Metabolic syndrome was positively correlated with TNM staging of colorectal cancer. The results of univariate survival analysis showed that age, sex, metastasis,TNM stage, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, surgery and chemotherapy were significantly associated with colorectal cancer prognosis.Multivariate survival analysis showed that age, sex, metastasis,TNM staging, surgery, chemotherapy, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were independent prognostic factors for colorectal cancer.Part 2: Metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus were risk factors for colorectal cancer metastasis and TNM staging.Hypertension was positively correlated with TNM staging of colorectalcancer.Univariate factor survival analysis showed that age, metastasis,TNM stage, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, surgery and hyperlipidemia were significantly associated with OS and PFS in patients with colorectal cancer.Multivariate survival analysis showed that metastatic,TNM staging, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, surgery and hyperlipidemia were associated with OS and PFS in patients with colorectal cancer.Age is only related to the OS of the patient. Conclusion 1.Two studies have shown that metabolic syndrome, diabetes and hypertension were associated with the progress of colorectal cancer(metastasis / TNM staging).2.The results of SEER-Medicare data: age, sex, metastasis,TNM stage, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hypertension was independent risk factor for the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer.Surgery, chemotherapy and hyperlipidemia were independent Protective factors for colorectal cancer prognosis.3.The analysis of hospital medical records showed that age, metastasis,TNM stage, diabetes mellitus and hypertension were independent risk factors of colorectal cancer. The prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer was independent of surgery and hyperlipidemia.Metabolic syndrome had no independent effect on the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer.
