ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to investigate the current situation of nurse's work environment and career conditions,to explore the difference of work environment and career conditions among nurses with different demographic characteristics,to analysis the correlation between work environment and career conditions and to explore the influence of work environment on nurses' career conditions.The results of the investigations would provide recommendations to improve nurses' work environment and career conditions for nurse manager.MethodsA total of 800 nurses were recruited from three third-grade class-A general hospitals which were selected by convenient sampling method in Wuhan.They were investigated by nurses' personal information questionnaire,Practice Environment Scale and Career Status Evaluation Scale.The collected data was analyzed by SPSS22.0,statistical methods including descriptive analysis,two independent samples t test,one-way ANOVA,Pearson correlation analysis,multiple linear step wise regression.Results(1)The total average score of nurses working environment was(3.06±0.43)points,five dimension scores from high to low were:the ability and leadership style of nursing administrators,medical cooperative relationship,high quality nursing service based,nurses participate in hospital affairs,plenty of manpower and material resources;nurses' work environment of different age,gender,working years,department,income,position level,whether to participate in the occupation career planning courses showed statistically significant differences(P < 0.05).(2)The total score of nurses' occupational status was(3.46±0.53)points,and scoring rate was about 69.12%,four dimension scores from high to low was retention will,occupation identity,occupation satisfaction,organizational commitment;nurses' career conditions of different age,gender,working years,department,income,professional ranks,position level,appointment mode and whether to participate in the occupation career planning courses showed statistically significant differences(P < 0.05).(3)The total score of nurses' work environment was positively correlated to the career condition score(P < 0.01).The score of other dimensions in work environment was all positively correlated to the career condition score and it's each dimension,but the score of the plenty of manpower and material resources dimension and medical cooperation dimension were uncorrelated to the turnover intention dimension.Nurses participate in hospital affairs and plenty of manpower and material resources can positively influence the nurse career conditions,they explained 38.8% of the variance.ConclusionThe scores of nurse career condition in Wuhan were in a medium level and nurses agreed with their working environment.The work environment and career condition of different nurses' demographic characteristics showed statistically significant differences.There was a significant positively correlation between nurses' work environment and career conditions.We could take these steps to improve nurses' work environment and career conditions:taking full participatory management to mobilize the nurses participating in the hospital,increasing investment and optimizing the existing manpower and resources allocation,combining the scientific guidance and encouragement to reasonably plan of nurses' career.
