Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the status of oral health cognition in elderly patients using the theory of health quotient, and to make a questionnaire of the oral health awareness of elderly patients based on health quotient scale. We investigated the status of oral health cognition among elderly patients in a Grade III hospital in Changchun,to understand the oral health cognition problems of elderly patients,to explore their influencing factors,to provide feasible suggestions and countermeasures according to the analysis results. Our purpose is to provide the basis for further improving the oral health education of the elderly. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey, which is a descriptive study. From February 2016 to July 2016,264 elderly patients who met the standards in this study were selected from a stomatological outpatient hospital in Changchun. The status of oral health cognition was investigated by means of questionnaires.Questionnaire included two parts, namely the basic data questionnaire, the elderly oral health awareness status questionnaire.Data were input in EpiData 3.1 software, and were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 software. The basic data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, among which the counting data were expressed in percentage, whereas the measurement data were expressed as x ± s.Chi-square test and nonparametric rank sum test were used to analyze the single factor. Results: 1.Age,cultural level, the nature of work, monthly income,or residence, can affect the elderly patients on oral health awareness.Patients between 60-69 years old showed the strongest self-care awareness, with the score of(23.48 ± 5.28)points.Our study showed that the education level, monthly income and residence can affect the score of self-care dimension of the patients, which had a statistically significance.2.The younger patients, with the degree of education in the undergraduate or above, with the occupation of administrative cadres, showed the highest score in health knowledge dimensions. They also showed better in mastering health knowledge and lifestyle choices.3.The elderly patients with income of more than 3,500 yuan showed the highest score in lifestyle, which was(28.19 ± 4.54)points.The elderly patients living in the city had a higher lifestyle score than those living in rural areas and counties.4.There was a significantly positive correlation between the degree of education, the monthly income, the self-assessment of the oral status and the mental state dimension score, which was significantly different(P <0.05).Conclusions: 1.Oral health status of elderly patients was not ideal, due to social environment, living conditions, their own factors and other complex causes, leading to a low level of oral health status.2.Sex has no effect on the dimensions of oral health cognition in elderly patients.3.The scores of oral health cognition in elderly patients increased with the increase of monthly income and cultural level, and were related to the residence, family status and self-evaluation of oral health.4.We suggested that elderly patients should have a more effective learning opportunity of oral health knowledge and self-care methods, and receive appropriate practical guidance, thus they can have better oral health care control under the guidance and promote to develop good health awareness and behavior, thereby improving the level of oral health.
