The Study On Oral Health And Its Influential Factors Among Elderly People From Kunming Hospital

Objectives:To investigate the oral health status of aged people in Kunming, s well as their oral health knowledge, cognition, behaviors of health. Exploring risk factors of periodontal disease, dental caries, dentition defect or edentulous from epidemiological point of view. Analyzing and exploring the impact of factors, combining with older demographic characteristics. Providing reference for health care workers, targeting for old people taking oral health education and treatment. Providing a more rational and scientific information support for the whole future of oral health and prevention work in Kunming or even Yunnan Province.Methods:This study used a simple random sampling method, September2013-January2014. For elderly patients or their families in Dental Hospital Of Kunming Medical University who older than or equal to60years old, we made a survey of periodontal disease, dental caries, dentition defect or edentulous and dental restorations condition, and made a questionnaire about oral health knowledge, cognition, behaviors of health as well as habits and general situation, etc. The survey tools are Oral Health Evaluation Form and Oral Health Knowledge, Cognition and Behavior Questionnaire and related equipments for oral examination. After completion of the field survey data, establishing data entry template with Epidata Software, we then entered all the valid forms. Descriptive statistics, Pearson χ2test, t test, single factor analysis of variance analysis and Poisson regression were performed to study the states and the influencing factors.Results:A total of510valid forms and questionnaires were obtained, among them,281were men,229were women. The old people ranged from60to88years. The study is divided into two parts.In the first part, tooth examinations were used to investigate oral health condition of elderly patients or their families, including periodontal disease, dental caries, dental defect and dental restorations condition. The result is:1. Patients with advanced periodontitis in elderly people in139cases, accounting for27.3%; early periodontitis in237elderly patients, accounted for46.5%; periodontal healthy completely in0cases; among them were65to70years of age the prevalence situation is most serious.2. The investigation group of DMFT was18.15; a total of419caries, caries prevalence rate was82.2%; the number of root surface caries prevalence was201, the prevalence rate is39.4%.3. The average number of oral cavity residual teeth of12.65stars; dentition defect prevalence rate is94.3%; the edentulous prevalence rate was5.1%.4. The proportion of older people is wearing removable partial denture is the highest; require one or more units of the joint repair demand ratio is the highest.The second part investigated oral health knowledge, cognition and behavior condition as well as habits and general situation among them, and analyzed the relevance of oral health status. The result is:1. The average score of knowledge and awareness of oral health problems for8.4hours, has not yet reached the passed9points.2.97.1%of the elderly can do daily brushing teeth, average two times, concentrated in the morning and before going to bed, only19people brushing time^3minutes; less than40%of the elderly with vertical brush method to clean the teeth the right,77.8%people can correctly placed on the toothbrush head. 3.223people received oral health knowledge through the media way;152of the medical staff;110people by relatives and friends.4. More than80%of the elderly had never had regular oral health examination, can do regular oral health examination every year only5people.5. Selection in oral clinic or hospital to see the teeth of municipal level and above the highest proportion, respectively32.1%and32.3%,27.7%of people choose in stomatological hospital.6. As many as90.6%of elderly people in the oral diseases, because of perceived disease is not heavy refused medical treatment, the other main reason for no time.Conclusions:1. The periodontal health status of aged people in Kunming city is not optimistic.2. Dental caries, missing teeth phenomenon.3. Oral health knowledge and cognition test score lower, older people have some grasp of oral health knowledge, but not comprehensive enough.4. General can do daily brushing, brushing time but not up to the standard of the popularity of recognized at home and abroad, brushing methods is low.5. The media is the main way for the elderly in Kunming city for oral health knowledge, very few people through the network or lecture.6. Old people is annual routine oral examination only1%, emphasis on oral health is low, many people still "toothache is not ill" wrong idea and even refused to see the doctor.7. With the increase of oral health knowledge, the DMFT decreased in number; oral health knowledge and cognition of the same score, age is small, the DMFT a fewer number of.
