Objective:Our study aimed to investigate the effect of obesity on the lung function test in asthmatic children of different age groups in Chongqing. Methods:Two hundred and ninety-four children with asthma were classified into pre-school age(3~under 6 years old)and school age(6~12years old)groups based on age,and then were classified into obese,over-weight and normal-weight groups based on BMI.All of children's pulmonary function were tested, large airway function includes forced vital capacity(FVC%)and forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1%),small airway function includes maximal expiratory flow 25(MEF25%),maximal expiratory flow 50(MEF50%)and maximal expiratory flow 75(MEF75%).Result: After adjustment for gender and BMI grouping,FEV1%,MEF25% and MEF50% in the preschool group were significantly higher than those in the school age group(P<0.05).Comparison between the two age groups of normal weight children, the FEV1%,MEF25% and MEF50% in the school age group were significantly lower than those in the preschool age group(P <0.05).FVC% and MEF50% in the school-age group were lower than those in the preschool group between the two age groups of overweight children. But between the two age groups of obese children, the lung function were not statistically significant. In pre-school age group, the statistically significant differences were found in both large and small airway function(FVC%,FEV1%,and MEF75%)between obese and normal-weight children. In school age group, the differences were only showed in large airway function(FVC% and FEV1%).The pulmonary function in both age groups were significantly reduced in obese children compared to children with normal weight. Conclusion:High BMI remains an important determinant of reduced lung function. The influence of obesity on the airway function in children with asthma had age difference, which was more obvious in preschoolers.
