A Comparison Of The Periodontal Health Of Adult Patients During Orthodontic Treatment With Invisalign And With Damon Clear

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate periodontal health in adult patients during initial-treatment with Invisalign and with Damon Clear,then the result can provide certain reference for adults in the choice of appliance.Methods: 40 cases of adult orthodontic patients were selected according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria,and then divided into 2 groups according to different choices of orthodontic appliance,each group had 20 cases.The patients of group A used Invisalign,and group B used Damon Clear ceramic self-ligating appliances.Both groups received oral hygiene education and supragingival scaling one week prior to the appliances were placed.The appliances were placed in both of upper and lower dental archs.The periodontal indices including plaque index(PLI),sulcus bleeding index(SBI),and probing depth(PD)were examined by one dentist in both groups immediately after appliances were placed,at the first(T1),the third(T3),and the sixth(T6)months during orthodontic treatment.SPSS21.0 was utilized to process and analyze the data.Repeated ANOVA was used to analyze the periodontal indices of different points in the same group.Paired t test was used to compare different points of the same group,and the comparison between different groups utilized independent-samples t test.The level of significance was set at P<0.05.Results: 1.The periodontal indices of group A at T1,T3,T6 were higher comparing with pre-treatment,but only PLI was significant different(P<0.05),and that PLI was highest at T1,the other indices were at T3.2.The periodontal indices of group B at T1 were increased obviously,comparing with pre-treatment,and the difference had statistical significance(P<0.05).At the third month,the indices were slightly decreased,but the difference still had statistical significance when compared with pre-treatment(P<0.05).At the sixth month,the indices continued to decrease,apart of PLI,the other indices were not statistically different(P>0.05).3.When comparing between groups,PLI was statistically different at T1,T3,T6(P<0.05),but PD and SBI were not.Conclusions: 1.Invisalign may bring some effect to adult patients' oral hygiene during initial-orthodontic treatment,but there is no significant effect on periodontal health.2.Damon Clear ceramic self-ligating appliances have obvious influence on patients' oral hygiene,and have influence on periodontal health to a certain extent.But the status of periodontal health could be improved obviously,when mastering oral hygiene procedures.3.Both Invisalign and Damon Clear appliances may bring some effect to adult patients' oral hygiene,but the influence on periodontal health between two groups is no significant difference in the initial-orthodontic treatment.
