Effects Of Different Brushing Time On Oral Hygiene In Adolescent Orthodontic Patients: A Clinical Study

Background:During the period of orthodontic treatment,the ignorance of oral hygiene can lead to periodontal problem and enamel demineralization which is the most dissatisfaction problem of the patient.Therefore,how to avoid and to reduce the occurrence of the problem has been an urgent issue for orthodontists to solve with.In the past,the oral health education for orthodontic patients requires them to brush their teeth at least for 3min.As for the specific effect of oral health in different brushing time has not been reported.This study is designed to investigate the oral health of adolescent orthodontic patients in different brushing time under systematic oral health guidance.Objective: To study the changes of oral health indexes in adolescent orthodontic patients under different brushing time,and to provide basis for orthodontists to give effective dental health promotion in clinic.Methods:A total of 123 adolescent orthodontic patients from the Department of Orthodontics,School and Hospital of Stomatology,Jilin University,were included,and they were divided into 1~3min,3~5min,5~7min and 7~10min groups based on the brushing time recorded during the period of orthodontic treatment.The relationship between different brushing time and oral health indexes was evaluated 1,3,and 6 months after experiment,such as sulcus bleeding index-plaque index,debris index-simplified and enamel demineralization index.Results:I.There is an increasing tend of brushing time in patients 1,3 and 6months after the beginning of the experiment.II.Compared with 1~5min group,the SBI in 1 and 6 months,PLI in 1,3 and6 months,DI in 3 months after the beginning of the experiment,5~10min groupwere significant reduced(P<0.05).III.There is a significance difference between 5~10min and 1~3min groupsof the DI~S in 1 month after the beginning of the experiment(P<0.05).IV.The results of SBI in 3 months,DI-S in 6 months showed that: 1~3min,3~5min and 5~10min groups were significant different(P<0.05).V.Patients at 1,3,and 6 months of follow-up showed that: the occurrencerate of enamel demineralization in different groups all appeared to increase withthe prolongation of the treatment.VI.Compared with the 3~5min,5~7min and 7~10min groups of EDI in 6months after the beginning of the experiment,the 1~3min group was significantdifferent(P<0.05).Conclusion:Brushing teeth more than 5min can improve the oral hygiene significantly and the best time is 5~7min;orthodontists should require the patients to brush teeth at least for 5min.
