Objective:To evaluate periodontal health in patient during treatment with either fixed orthodontic appliances or Invisalign; to compare periodontal indices in patient with conventional brackets and a series of invisible aligners.Methods:45cases were randomly selected from the Stomatology Hospital of Shandong University. The range for the pre-treatment age was20to40years. These forty-five patients (20to40years old) were divided into2groups according to the type of appliance (group A:25patients with conventional pre-adjusted brackets and group B:20patients with invisible aligners). Periodontal indices (gingival index, GI; sulcus probing depth, SPD; sulcus bleeding index, SBI; plaque index, PLI) were examined in both groups at three control visits (1,3,6months separately) by the same periodontal specialist, therefore to compare and analyse impacts of two appliances on the periondontal health of the patient.Result:1. In Group A there is significant difference among all periodontal indices except SPD, during the orthodontic treatment.2..In Group B there is no significant difference among all periodontal indices except PLI, during the orthodontic treatment.3. There is no significant difference between Group A and Group B prior to orthodontic treatment. During the process of treatment, all periodontal indices except PLI are not statistically different.Conclusion:1. Traditional fixed appliance may bring some unbeneficial effect to the patient’s periodontal health.2. Invisalign appliance could not have obvious influence on the patient’s periodontal health.3. Although Invisialign appliance is more beneficial for the patient to keep oral hygiene, but there is no significant difference on the patient’s periodontal health.
