Object To investigate and study patients' smoking habit, oral hygiene habits and periodontal status of OSF.To discuss the impact on OSF from the factors mentioned above. This study aims to provide reference for measure of oral hygiene precaution and heath protection of OSF patients and betel chewers.Method Fifty samples clinically and pathologically diagnosed as OSF patients are selected as OSF group.Another fifty healthy volunteers who are age-matched,in similar living condition and non-betel nut chewers are classified as control group. The first step is to gather general information on oral health habits from questionnaire survey. This includes sex, age, smoking, daily brushing times, brushing duration, brushing method and so on.And then five periodontal clinical parameters are collected and recorded:plaque index, periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment loss, gingival index and tooth count of bleeding of probing.Next step is to build a database based on SPSS13.0 scientific data. Finally statistical analysis is carried out by using t-test,χ2 test and logistic regression analysis methods.Result1.OSF patients are mostly men, accounting for 96.0%,while only two were women.20 to 40 age group the proportion as high as 78%,the average age(33.20±8.59)years old.Smoking, education level and living environment are matched in these two groups(P>0.05).2.The rate of using the correct way to brush in OSF group in each of the following aspects is lower than that of the control group(P<0.05): daily brushing times, brushing duration and brushing method.Only 54% in OSF group can persist brushing daily more than twice,26%can brush for more than three minutes, and only 28%use the correct method to brush.Obviously, this kind of brushing method cannot clean teeth effectively.86%in the control group brush their teeth more than twice a day, which makes the control group better than the OSF group, but only less than half in the control group know how to brush properly.3.There is a significant difference between the OSF group and the control group concerning plaque index(PLI)(P<0.01).There is significant difference in periodontal probing depth(PD)(P<0.01).PD for the control group is(1.98±0.70)mm,and it is(5.57±2.39)mm for the OSF group. There is no big difference in clinical attachment loss(CAL), Gingival index(GI),tooth count of bleeding on probing(BOP)between the two groups.4.OSF mainly caused by betel chewing is a prerequisite for this point.Integrated with logistic analysis the results show that:the following aspects have positive influence on OSF:smoking, daily brushing less than twice a day, increase in PD and increase in PLI.Conclusion1.Gender distribution ratio is mostly men,20 to 40 age group is the major age range of medical treatment of OSF patients.2.Comparing the rate of people having correct oral hygiene in two groups,OSF patients have poor oral hygiene habits and cannot grasp the correct brushing methods, thus they cannot brush their teeth effectively. We suggest that oral hygiene instrument should be merged into diagnosis and treatment processes, emphasize that OSF patients should persist in brushing teeth effectively and insure the health of periodontal tissue. 3.Compared with the healthy people,OSF patients are easier to get plaque accumulated, deep periodontal pocket, periodontal inflammation or severe periodontal damage.4.Accepted OSF mainly caused by betel chewing is a prerequisite for this point, the following aspects are very likely to be risk factors which deteriorate the OSF caused by betel nut chewing:smoking, daily brushing less than twice a day, increase in PD and increase in PLI.
