| ObjectiveThe purposes of this research focused on Professor Liu Min's medical philosophies and his experiences of using only Chinese medication to treat Type Two Diabetes Mellitus patients(T2DM).In this research,some medical records of Professor Liu' s diabetes patients' would be collected,filtered,identified,analyzed,organized and evaluated.The result of this research would summarize the effectiveness of Professor Liu's pure Chinese medicine treatmentson diabetes and diabetes complications patients(diabetes around neural lesions,and diabetes retinal lesions).The result would also provide a clear view of Professor Liu' s pure Chinese medicine treatment philosophies;his thought processes to identify and differentiate specific types of Diabetes Mellitus patients;his rationalities of prescriptions and the specific features of each prescription for different patients.At the same time,this research could be used as a way or a thought process for diabetes prevention.With this research,followers in this field would be benefited by Professor Liu's application of Chinese medication experience,his philosophes to treat T2DM patients and his recommendation to prevent diabetes occurrence.In addition,this research would increase the confidence level of using Chinese medication and it also offer a great option for doctors and patients in this field.After all,the inheritance and development of Chinese medicines are of great significance of China.MethodsControllable data was collected at Professor Liu's clinic from August 2015 to January 2017.During that period,30 cases of type 2 Diabetes patients were identified and qualified for this research study.After consolidating the data from the past history of the qualified patients,new visiting data from this group of patients were collected,reviewed,follow-up and analyzed.This group of patients were under close observations and retrospective studies during their visits to Professor Liu' s clinic.The observations and studies included:patients' blood glucose level changes before and after the pure Chinese medication and other multiple indexes change;and the effectiveness of using pure Chinese medication treatment.Through the observation,data collection and evaluation,Professor Liu' s philosophes of using pure Chinese medicine to treat T2DM and methodology of treatments based on syndrome differentiation rules and formula features were validated.ResultsAfter taking the Chinese medicine only treatment for T2DM for three months,43.33%of the patients' blood glucose returned to normal level.Although the result showed less than half of the participants get cure using pure Chinese medicine,there was only one patient(3.33%)whose blood glucose level did not improve at all.The rest(53.33%)of the participants' blood glucose level showed significant improvement(even though they were not back to normal level).Also,there were T2DM patients who switched from western medicine treatments to Chinese only medicine treatments for three months,whose blood glucose levels were kept the same as they were taking the western medicine.These results obviously indicate the effectiveness of Chinese medicine in controlling blood glucose levels.This research also collected 217 patients' visiting data and their prescriptions from Professor Liu.The data indicated that the most popular type of herbs that Professor Liu use for T2DM were supplement "yang" and"warm" types.He also recommends "tonifying of spleen","qi","removing spleen dampness",and "detoxification".These are significant data to support professor Liu' s philosophies of using Chinese medicine to treat diabetes patients and his methodologies of "warming" and "tonifying spleen yang" type of medicines.Through a survey of the 30 qualified patients,the researcher found that patients with higher education and younger at age would more likely to accept the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine.The average age of the control group(30 people)is 49.98 years old.Control group patients who has a college degree or above accounted for 57%.This research summarized Professor Liu's clinical characteristics and his specialties in pure Chinese medicine treatment for T2DM.Professor Liu emphasized the clinical dialectical treatment,symptoms of both internal and external,find the laws of pathogenesis,and grasping the main symptoms.He realized the incidence of diabetes was highly related to individual's body fluid situation.The deficiency or un-even distribution of body fluid would most likely cause diabetes.With this philosophy in mind,he often compares the treatment of diabetes to the treatment of flood.In Guangdong province,the climate is wet and hot which may easy cause people fell into "damp heat"situation.And doctors should be distinguish the type of "damp heat"espeically for T2DM obese patients whether if the heavy damp type or the heavy heat type,"damp heat" existenced in the internal or external etc.Professor Liu highly recommends doctors to find the discease root before they prescript the Chinese medicine to their patients.ConclusionThe research summarizes Professor Liu Min's clinical experience on treating type 2 diabetes as follows:1.Professor Liu' s clinical findings in diabetic patients with deficiency of spleen and kidney are more common,so the medication with tonifying the spleen and kidney,such as Lizhongtang,Fuzilizhong decoction,and so on are useful to help "warm","yang" and invigorating spleen.2.The insulin is a basic substance of body fluid,"Yin jin".Therefore the treatment of diabetes should follow the example of Da Yu to prevent floods,"treatment of diabetes as such as governance flood".3.Obese patients with T2DM in south of the Five Ridges should pay attention to the treatment of damp heat syndromes.Eliminating the cause from "heavy wet" or "dampness heat",and at the same time to dredge "qi".4.In order to provide an effective treatment for diabetic complications patients,doctors and patients can consider using both "oral administration" type of Chinese medicine andChinese medical bath(or partial body bath)treatment method. |
