Objectives:1. To survey the current status of the professional identification of nurses in tertiary hospitals of Nanjing city.2. To compare the professional identification between nurses with different background in tertiary hospitals.3. To survey the current status of the work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals of Nanjing city.4. To compare the work engagement between nurses with different background in tertiary hospitals.5. To explore the relationship between the professional identification and work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals.6. To offer solutions to promot the professional identification and work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals.Methods:A total of 323 nurses from nine tertiary hospitals of Nanjing city were investigated using the Professional Identity Scale for Nurses (PIS) and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) by multistage and convenience sampling method.Results:1. The total score of the professional identification was (93.50±16.70), the scores of the factors from high to low were professional identity evaluation, professional social support, dealing with professional frustration, professional self-reflection and professional social skill.2. Practicing year, position, administrative office title, night shift number could significantly affect professional identification of nurses in tertiary hospitals (P<0.05). Among the levels of nurse professional identification, working time 0.5-5 years, night shift frequencies 1-4 days per month and head nurses were significantly higher than others (P<0.05). Nurses in ICU got lower scores than those of other departments (P<0.05).3. Age, title, education background, the'average monthly wage, marital status, status of children, employed status, and status of dual-earner couples in hospital could not significantly affect professional identification of nurses in tertiary hospitals (P>0.05).4. The total score of the work engagement was (3.53±1.11), the scores of the factors from high to low were absorption, dedication and vigor.5. Practicing year, position, and status of dual-earner couples in hospital could significantly affect the work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals (P<0.05). Among the levels of nurse work engagement, working time 0.5-5 years, head nurses and status of non-dual-earner couples in hospital were significantly higher than others (P<0.05).6. Age, title, education background, marital status, administrative office, night shift number, the average monthly wage, status of children and employed status could not significantly affect the work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals (P>0.05).7. The professional identification correlated positively with work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals. Professional social support and professional self-reflection were the protective element for the work engagement of nurses. Dealing with professi-onal frustration was the protective element for absorption.Conclusions:1. The professional identification of nurses in tertiary hospitals was in lower medium level, and still needed to be promoted and strengthened. Professional identity evaluation was proved to be the highest, while professional social skill being the lowest which was needed to be strengthened.2. Practicing year, position, administrative office title and night shift number were influencing factors of nurse professional identification.3. The work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals was at the middle level, which was needed to be strengthened.4. The influencing factors of work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals were practicing year, position, and status of dual-earner couples in hospital.5. Professional social support and professional self-reflection were correlated positively with the work engagement of nurses in tertiary hospitals. Improving nurses'professional social support and self-reflection, was helpful to improve the level of job involvement, and improving nurses' professional frustration coping ability could help to increase their working concentration.
