Objective:Exploration and observation of the simple upper fibular osteotomy's effect on for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee with genu varum. Methods:Our department have received and cured 12 patients(15 knees) with knee osteoarthritis mainly suffering interval inside pain since January 2015. The above patients were all female with age varying from 48 to 72, with an average age of 61.3.Their average disease time is 5.3 years, ranging from 0.5 to 10 years. They all have been performed only the fibula osteotomy, which means cutting out of 2-3cm fibular around6-10 cm below the neck of ipsilateral fibula in the ipsilateral body to cure the osteoarthritis. Early postoperative ambulation activities of joint were conducted after surgery and the corresponding radiographic assessment before and after operations were carried out with record and analysis the following indicators: VAS, KSS, HSS,respectively before, 2 days and 2 month after the operation. Results:First, all patients were hospitalized an average length of 6 days, ranging from 1 to 9days. The time of unilateral operation without significant bleeding undergoes an average of 33.3 minutes, varying from 25 to 55 minutes. Postoperative wound infection, delayed healing, nerve damage and other complications were not observed. Second, all the patients could walk around 1 days after operations, and gave a chief complaint that the interval medial knee pain obviously reduced or fully disappeared. X-ray film of the weight-bearing knee was taken 2 days after surgery and compared to that before operation, and varying degrees of post-medial gap increment appeared. Third, The VASscore, HSS score and KSS clinical score showed a remarkable improvement(P <0.05) 2days after surgery compared to before operation. And an evident increment(P<0.05) of VAS score, HSS score, KSS clinical score and KSS functional score was recorded, in comparison with that before the surgery. Conclusion:A simple upper fibular osteotomy has been proved to significantly reduce the postoperative pain and facilitate the good recovery of joint function with the advantages of simple surgical procedures and slighttrauma. Therefore, it is an effective method for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee with varus deformity.
