Objective: to investigate the attitude towards patient suicide of nurses in a general hospital and explore its influencing factors.Method: this research used qualitative study and quantitative study. Clinical nurses in a general hospital were selected to participate in this research. The attitude towards patient suicide of clinical nurses and its influencing factors were explored by using focus group interview and self-made questionnaire. The data from the focus group interview were managed by software QSR NVIVO8 and analyzed by an analytical technique which was base on the grounded theory. Self-made questionnaire was used to survey the attitude towards patient suicide of nurses. The data drawn from the questionnaire were transcript with the software EPIDATA3.0 and analyzed by the software SPSS20.0.Results: through the management and analysis of the data from focus group interview, the theme of attitude towards patient suicide and influencing factors emerged. Attitude towards patient suicide: positive, neutral and negative. Among which, the theme “positive” includes three subthemes: life quality, right and sense of self-esteem, the theme “negative” also comprises there subthemes: sense of responsibility, lack of care and ethic. There themes of influencing factors are life value, study and social role. The analytic results of data from the questionnaire show that the attitudes of 199(37.2%) nurses are positive towards patient suicide, 328(61.3%) nurses are neutral and 8(1.5%) nurses are negative. On the attitude towards suicidal act, 292(54.6%)nurses are positive, 214(40.0%)nurses are neutral and 29(5.4%)nurses are negative. On the attitude towards patients with suicidal act, 140(26.2%)nurses are positive, 359(67.1%)nurses are neutral and 36(6.7%)nurses are negative. On the attitude towards family members of suicidal patient, 166(31.0%)nurses are positive, 314(58.7%)nurses are neutral and 55(10.3%)nurses are negative. On the attitude towards euthanasia, 329( 61.5%) nurses are positive, 158( 29.5%)nurses are neutral and 48(9.0%)nurses are negative. Among all the influencing factors of attitude towards patient suicide, whether they have children, whether they had participated in a mental health / mental crisis intervention training, have statistical significance.Conclusions: study shows that clinical nurses are neutral towards suicide. At the same time, they play the role of “gatekeeper” in the prevention of patient suicide. They help patient to rebuild the life confidence by physical and psychological intervention so as to avoid patient suicide. And their attitude towards patient suicide will affect the enthusiasm and scientific nature of the performance of their roles. At the same time, whether they have children, whether they had participated in a mental health / mental crisis intervention training, will affect the attitude of clinical nurses towards patient suicide. Therefore, to know the attitude of clinical nurses towards patient suicide, strengthen intervention training of mental health/mental crisis among nurses, and establish a positive attitude to suicide will play a great significance in the precaution of patient suicide and the management of hospital safety.
