Object:This article starts from making a longitudinal developmental analysis and transverse comparison of the obstetrical department; then making the SWOT analysis about the developmental strategies to obtain a comprehensive understanding and an accurate position of the hospital. This article also puts forward strategies for development under health reform and competition. Methods:This subject adopts the methods of combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, theoretical method with empirical research, including compared research, sampling method, document research, investigation and expert consultation. Results:The obstetrical department now handles about 40 percent of volume of hospital. Its scale and volume have been expanded rapidly. It tries to meet the needs of lying-in women by accelerating the turnover rate of patients in the hospital through reasonably controlling the average hospital day, and by changing its medical service model. It also tries to control a reasonable c-section rate and to maintain a high medical quality, even in the situation where more and more patients have complication and co-morbidity. Nowadays, tertiary hospitals, with private hospitals and military hospitals, they make up the Fuzhou obstetric service supply's three pillars. Various indicators of the obstetrical department have been growing steadily, which let the hospital running ahead of other midwifery institutions. But the private hospitals and military hospitals have grown much more quickly than Fujian Provincial Maternity and Children's hospital.Analysis:Through vertical and horizontal comparison of the macroscopic environment, such as pertinent policies, development of economic society and scientific technology, this article utilizes the SWOT analysis, putting forward the following conclusions: The obstetrical department of Fujian Provincial Maternity and Children's hospital, which has a significant size, technology, human resources and other advantages, has won a good reputation among patients. Moreover, its overall strength of perinatology has laid a solid foundation for its long-term development. But it also has problems, such as institutional rigor, limitation of space. Otherwise, paying more attention to medical and looking down on service are other tow serious problems. Furthermore, it faces some threats like core brain drain, and increasing competition. In order to achieve the spanning development, the hospital must seize the opportunities of the two-child policy and foundation of medical complex.Suggestion:In order to set out the mechanism and system reform, we must focus on the following four major areas: personnel, technology, management, and service. The hospital must hold the thought of people-oriented and do its best to take patient as its center. Then it should construct groups of relevant subjects by augmenting disciplinary integration under the guidance of theory of perinatology.
