Medical plants are extensively distributed in C hina, we have much experience of application of herbal medicine. Natural drugs have always been the important source of innovative drugs, and have unique advantages and potential in many disease areas like inflammation, cancer, immunity. So it is important to find novel natural drugs from traditional Chinese medicinal plants.Leontopodium is important medicinal p lant and has been reported to exhibit a broad range of bioactivities such as antiinflammatory, antitumor, antioxidation, antibacterial, analgesic. A large number of diterpenes, triterpenes and flavonoids have been isolated fro m Leontopodium species. The plant Leontopodium calocephalum is the genus Asteraceae of the family Leontopodium, mainly distributed northwest China. The aerial parts of several Leontopodium plants are used as traditional Chinese medicines for the remedy of acute and chronic nephritis, urethritis, hematuresis, fever, trauma hemorrhage etc. Compared to other species in Leontopodium, this plant was rarely investigated. In this paper, we studied the chemical constituents in the methanol extract from the roots of Leontopodium calocephalum collected in Q inghai province. O n the basis of spectroscopic methods, ten compounds were identified and they were elucidated as flavonoids, triterpenes, sterols and phthalides. Two phthalides are new compounds. We also evaluated its the antibacterial experiments of XLP-1 and XLP-4, they did not show obvious antibacterial activity. In summary, the thesis comprehensively investigated the chemical constituents and bioactivities of the roots of Leontopodium calocephalum, which might be of significance for the exploitation of this species and helpful reference for pharmacology and screening new medicine.
