Objective: Phototherapy has became the popoular method for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, with nearly 10 years of development, the light source range from fluorescent lamp, blue light lamp, halogen lamp to green light and blue light emitting diode(LED).Phototherapy has been considered as the safest and most effective method for the treatment of jaundice. But in recent years,a growing number of research found that phototherapy can cause short-term and long-term effects. As the LED light was widely used in clinic,we shuould pay more attention to the safety of the LED light source. The purpose of this study is to analyze the change in oxidative damage level, antioxidant ability and DNA damage,at the same time comparing the difference between two kinds of light source in oxidative damage level, antioxidant ability and DNA damage. Methods: The study was conducted from January 2015 to December,Cases comprised a convenient sample of 60 neonates(35–42weeks)of indirect hyperbilirubinemia(UCH),according to hospital sequence, the neonates were divided into A and B groups randomly, group A was cured with LED treatment, group B was treated with traditional blue light treatment. Two milliliters of peripheral venous blood was drawn under aseptic condition before Phototherapy and 24 hours after Phototherapy,in order to analyze 8-OHDG level,SOD level and MDA level. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between before Phototherapy and 24 hours after Phototherapy in 8-OHDG level in both LED group and traditional blue light group(LED group:Z=-0.148,P=0.886,Traditional blue light group:Z=-0.835,P=0.408).After 24 hours treatment both the LED group and the traditional blue light group have lower serum SOD level compared with the beginning of the treatment, there existed statistically significant difference between before treatment and after treatment(LED group :t=2.158,P=0.035,Traditional blue light group :t=2.031,P=0.047),there was no statistically significant difference of serum SOD levels between LED group and traditional blue light group after 24 hours treatment(t=-0.263,P=0.794).After 24 hours treatment LED group and the traditional blue light group have higher serum MDA level compared with before treatment, there existed statistically significant difference between before treatment and after treatment(LED group:t=-2.317,P=0.025,Traditional blue light group:t=-2.066,P=0.043),there was no statistically significant difference of serum MDA levels between LED group and traditional blue light group after 24 hours treatment(t=0.051,P=0.959).Conclusions: The phototherapy not only can reduce the bilirubin degree, but also cause oxidative stress and reduce the oxidation ability, but not result in DNA damage. There was no statistical difference between LED group and traditional blue light group in oxidative stress and antioxidant ability.
