Zhao tomb,where the Emperor Taizong of Qing Dynasty and his Empress Borjigin(posthumous title: Xiaoduan)are buried,is located in the south of the Longye Mountainin the northern outskirt of Shenyang(former Shengjing).It was thelatest builtbut the grandest and the most exquisite among the three imperial mausoleums outside Shanhaiguan Pass in the early Qing Dynasty(A.D.1644-A.D.1911).Thanks to its special geographic location and political significance,a macro environment integrating Manchu,Han and Mongolianethnic cultures took shape in this area,so the building of Zhao tomb manifested inclusive characteristics in construction technology and decorative style.On the basis of literature research and field survey,this paper discusses the general engineering situation of Zhao tomb in architectural layout and construction system history;describesin detail all the single buildings in the constructiongroup.Using the method of systematic analysis and comparison,this paper studies the carpentry work,stone work,tile work and the decorative characteristics of Zhao tomb,and tentatively expounds the times and regional characteristics reflected bythe construction methods of the Mausoleum.By combining theoretical research and case support,from the perspectives of the overall planning methods and external space design intention,this paper exploresthe application of ancient Chinese architectural design theory in the construction of Zhao tomb;through the interpretation of sacrificial rites,this paper strives to discoverthe space behavior of sacrifice.It also seeks to profoundly display the architectural features and the cultural relic value of Zhao tomb and lay a foundation for the future studies on the mausoleum system of Qing Dynasty in terms of lineage.
