Study On The Minimum Security Following Distances Of Trucks On Freeway

Abstract/Summary:
In recent years,the cost of highway construction and the total mileage of highway in China increase dramatically.As of the end of 2016,the total highway mileage has exceeded 130 thousand kilometers,which is of the first rank in worldwide highway mileage.With the rapid development of China’s economy,the total freight volume obviously increased.The amount of highway freight accounts for about 75% of the total freight volume particularly.Large truck transportation is the main component of road freight transportation system.Therefore,the guarantee of truck safety is a key to ensure the safety of road freight transportation.Truck accident has the characteristics of high accident rate,high rate and large property loss.In addition,rear-end collision is the main form of truck accident,and the key to avoid truck rear-end collision is to maintain a reasonable vehicle travelling distance,so it is necessary for the minimum safe driving distance of trucks to ensuring both traffic safety and traffic efficiency.Based on the analysis of existing safe driving distance models,this paper summarized the advantages,and disadvantages of different models.Then this paper put forward a safe truck driving distance model based on the vehicle braking process which considering the driver’s behavior.This paper also discussed four factors which are drivers,vehicles road and environment under different weather conditions,and the relevant parameters(driver reaction time,coordination,brake time,driving speed,vehicle maximum acceleration,and braking safety distance)were calibrated.Then the safety driving distances were calculated in good,rainy and foggy condition respectively.The paper also put forward the corresponding speed limit measures when the visible degree is small especially in foggy and rainy days.Finally,by means of TruckSim2016 software,the paper calculated the safe driving distance,which shows that the model is reasonable.According to the TruckSim2016 simulation data,the paper establishes the minimum safe driving distance model of truck on the slope with curved section of highway.
