Characteristics And Methodology Of Chinese Modern Urban Planning History Research

The paper gives a brief account of the research progress in Chinese modern planning history in terms of researchers and research contents,by searching and studying the related papers published since the 1980s.Furthermore,the paper focuses on the research contents from the aspects of planning practice,planners,ideology and theory,legislation and system,ontology.Urban planning history in China is a sub-discipline belongs to the urban and rural planning,while in the western academic world it is under the field of social science.Simultaneously,it is an interdiscipline of Urban-Rural Planning and history,with scientificity from natural science and social science,as well as artistry from humanities.Determined by its extensive research coverage,as well as its interdisciplinarity,sub-disciplinarity and immaturity of methodology,urban planning history has to borrow methodology from other disciplines.After analysing and exemplifing the methods commonly used in the research of Chinese modern urban planning history specifically,which including the literature method,the oral history method,the quantitative research method and the comparative study method,the paper formulates a three-level method system of planning history,which includes general methods,historiography methods and interdisciplinary methods,and focuses on interdisciplinary methods,which draw from natural science,social science and humanities.
