Shenchi South Station is located in Shenchi County, Xinzhou, Shanxi Province. The station functions as a district station that links Shenshuo, Shuohuang, and Zhunchi railways which are all individual coal transportation railway lines. Among the three railways, Shenshuo railway and Huaichi railway link the main coal fields in Shanxi, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia-China, with hundreds of special trains of coal transportation arriving at Shenchi South Station; Shuohuang railway is the special coal transportation railway line linking Shenchi South Station and Huanghua port, which is also the second largest heavy load railway of "western coal eastward transporting corridor". To satisfy the vast transportation volume of Shuohuang railway, Shenchi South Station is overburdened with massive train transits, marshaling tasks, and its responsibilities of locomotive running preparation and shifts of Shuohuang railway. The station is facing with stressful capacity problems. In this article, section two gives a detailed introduction of the current situation of Shenchi South Station, including its station yard, linkages in all directions, mode of operation, and scheduling of louver maintenance. Section three then analyzes particularly the flexibility of Shenchi South Station's arrival-departure track based on its calculated occupancy using the traffic volume in the year 2015 and 2016, resulting in the station's tense use of the arrival-departure track. Following is the analysis of the station's current transportation structure in section four. Utilization rates of different stations'equipment are calculated according to the standard of the station's operation hours. Through further analysis, four problems are revealed:capacity deficiency of the station No.2's eastern throat, low utilization rate of arrival-departure track, poor locomotive circulation, and low dispatching ratio of heavy-loaded trains.Section five proposed three methods to optimize Shenchi South Station's capacity, targeting specifically at the four problems discovered in section four. The first method focuses on the relocating of some operations from locomotive running tracks to fixed tracks in order to release the middle-part arrival-departure track. Doing so could potentially increase the number of arrival-departure tracks that are available, as well as the utilization rate of those tracks. The second method emphasizes the integration of locomotive routings of Shenshuo and Shuohuang railways so that number of operated locomotives is lowered, the station's operating pressure is reduced, and the station's operation method is optimized. The third way suggests increasing the ratio of dispatching trains in Shuohuang railway; as a result, the operating pressure of Shenchi South Station and Shuohuang railway is reduced, the current capacity situation is also improved. The methods above all include the calculated and analyzed optimization effectiveness based on the run chart of year 2015. The article aims to find the optimum way to improve Shenchi South Station's transportation structure.
