Daowai District is a community where modern Harbin Chinese inhabited and also the place where Harbin's national industry and commerce generated. In the district, Daowai Historical Block is an important historic conservation block of Harbin. The well-bedded block & courtyard system and Chinese baroque buildings whose existing scale is the largest both manifest unique styles and features of Chinese and the Western. Nonetheless, the block still appears declining although it has gone through multiple conservation planning. In order to avoid mass-demolishing and mass-construction caused by subjective experience planning,a comparatively precise quantitative analysis of the block is carried out in this thesis by virtue of spatial syntax theory and method, so as to analyze the centrality and adaptability of the block and to provide reference for the block's sustainable development.Based on the full investigation of the block's features and problems, the author, through two analytical technologies of spatial syntax and from the two aspects of urban evolution and the block's spatial and functional interactive relationship, explores and analyzes spatial elements influencing the centrality changes and spatial mechanisms adapting to times changes. First of all, starting from the time when the city was under construction, the author analyzes the evolution of Daowai Historical Block's centrality from the construction of Harbin City up to now. Then the author analyzes the relationship between urban commercial center and the core of integration degree by stages. On this basis, the author further analyzes spatial motivations affecting Daowai Historical Blcok's centrality changes, points out that due to the separation of terrain and raliways, Daowai Historical Block lacks spatial conditions to become the main center of the city, and moreover, due to the lack of direct relation between the central street—Jingyu Street and the main center of the city, the block could not directly benefit from the crowd from the main center.Secondly, on the basis of the affirmation of integration degree and transmission degree of spatial configuration's respectively influencing purposiveness and trafficability flow distribution, the author carries out an analysis of line segments with different radius dimensions on Daowai Historical Block's street spaces, clarifies spatial attributes and features of each street and makes a contrast between its street spaces and real-time flow and block functions, discovering that the radius accessibility analysis in close relation to pedestrian volume is consistent with street scopes controled by local space of the main street Jingyu Street. Therefore, based onthe above discovery, the author gives a spatial potential beforehand evaluation after implementing the block's planning and design schemes. This thesis mainly conducts a reseach on Daowai Historical Block. Starting from the value and existing problems of the block, this thesis points out spatial elements that may influence Daowai Historical Blcok's centrality changes and function distribution and elucidates the block's spatial and functional action mechanism.
