Compared with the general freeway sections, traffic accident happened in highway tunnel tends to be severer and thus increasing the probability for fatalities or incapacitating injuries. The main cause that makes the tunnel portal become accident black spots is that the drastic brightness changes inside and outside the entrance of the tunnel, which make drivers difficult to adapt.The innovation of this paper is that a new method to solve this problem with reasonable virescence configuration had been put forward. Reasonable virescence configuration can play an important buffering role in sudden change of light; it also can shorten the visual adaptive process and lighten the burden of drivers’ psychology. Moreover, relative to other way of buffering, green plants in tunnel portal are more favorable in beautifying the road, purifying air, reducing noise and improve the environment condition, thus realizing the goal of ecological restoration and safety-driving at the same time. The main content and achievements are as follows:1、Based on the driving test and a mass of experimental data we found the quantitative relationship between the virescence form of tunnel portals and the illumination difference inside and outside the tunnel, the heart rate changes of a driver.2 、Drivers’ heart rate changed obviously when approaching the tunnel portals. In the whole process from approaching the entrance to driving away from the exits, drivers’ heart rate growth presents an overall declining trend.3 、In the tunnel, drivers’ psychological load reduce and the anxiety ease gradually with the degree of green deepening. Virescence configuration on tunnel portals can effectively ease the drivers’ anxiety when driving through the tunnel portals.4 、With reference to relevant tunnel lighting design standards and specifications, landscape design methods in tunnel portals were proposed based on psychological and visual adaption. Then two calculation methods of green transition length are deduced and applicability was analyzed. According to the tunnel greening conditions, corresponding tunnel green transition section setting methods were respectively put forward from the aspects such as plant species, plant height and plant spacing.
