Nowadays conservation and research of architectural heritage has been stuck in a low level in China, which is far from imagination that management of a life cycle is applied to architectural heritage. So there is a need to alter this static, isolated phenomenon. Informatization survey and measurement provides new ideas and process for conservation practice. On one hand, I make a theoretical summary about informatization survey and measurement macroscopically in field of historical buildings based on existing researches; on the other hand, with the help of typology, I come up with new technical strategies to solve problems for information collection and interpretation in the field, taking its own advantages of BIM.I propose a new method to collect information—trees of two kinds: type and structure--and then state necessity and feasibility of the method, for collection; for management, I optimize ways of expression of informational model further in levels of different details; for interpretation I put forward new ways—ghost family and diagrammatic component family—to interpret defects of historical buildings. In practice, I elaborate how BIM is used with specific ways and process of information collection, model work and management in informatization survey and measurement of historical buildings, based on actual examples, such as Dehe Palace in the Summer Place in Beijing and the Gate Tower in Jiayuguan in Gansu. Having considered practical requests in conservation practice, I keep exploring intrinsic property and extensive range and demonstrate, analyze feasibility of information management and interpretation of BIM in historical buildings.
