Communication system plays an indispensable support role to the safe and economic operation of power system. As the electric power market demand continuously improve and the optical fiber communication technology develops rapidly. Construction of smart grid has become an inevitable trend. "The light replace the copper " has become the inevitable choice of electric power communication technology. EPON technology has become the most widely optical fiber access technology for its natural technical and cost advantages. Because it has similar network architecture with the distribution network, it is suitable for application in distribution automation system. OLTs of EPON network are placed in electronic station and power ONUs in distribution terminals. They are in connection through the passive optical network.Power ONUs need external power for the power supply. This paper designed an intelligent way of power supply by photovoltaic complementary with grid. It has the following advantages: Firstly, Photovoltaic power generation does not consume fossil energy, saving primary energy. It is clean and not polluted, and do not produce waste gas pollutants; Secondly, it can maintain the power supply when the mains failure, foe the energy source is endless, which ensures the normal operation of the power ONU; Thirdly, it doesn’t be restricted by geographical location. As long as the place has sunshine, any voltage level can be geted through reasonable design, which solves the problem that it is difficult to take electricity for the outside monitoring nodes, and provides a strong support for global coverage of distribution automation. The EPON system structure is point to multipoint. Every moment only one ONU can upload data and the rest have to wait for a moment. Dormancy mechanism can make the waiting for ONUs shut down part of the energy dissipation module and enter a dormant state. Existing research shows that it can save 20% ~ 80% of the energy. As the EPON application in power system, power ONU node will be more and more. The energy consumption will be very large. Carring out energy saving optimization for the ONU can greatly reduce the energy consumption, which reduces the cost of power supply.This paper first describes the current situation of power system communication, carries on a brief analysis and comparison of power system communication mode and expounds the technical superiority of EPON in power system communication; Secondly introduces the EPON network structure and its technical principle. This paper also introduces the key technology of EPON. EPON network application mode and topological structure in power distribution network is also studied; Then according to the photovoltaic application technology, including photovoltaic principle, maximum power tracking, battery charging management techniques and mains complementary technology, this paper designed photovoltaic(pv) power supply for power ONU. It has maximum power tracing and fast charging function, can be complementary with mains power supply and has realized the power of the ONU uninterrupted power supply. It saves electricity and the experimental performance and output power quality has been verified; Finally studies EPON energy-saving method that based on the dormancy mechanism and analyzes the power distribution terminal business types and their real-time classification. According to ONU business situation under the OLT, in the balance of power system information priority and fairness to carry on sleep mode. This paper proposes strategy of dormancy control and energy saving method based on improved bandwidth allocation, optimizing the ONU photovoltaic power supply.
