Since the reform and opening up,China's rapid economic growth has always been in sharp contrast with the environmental recession in recent years.China's environmental degradation has gained great attention from home and abroad.The Party and government are vigorously promoting the ecological civilization system,and the public environmental awareness has been awakening and turning in active participation in environmental governance.China's environmental issues also expand the view of China studies and their research can shed insightful advice on China's practice.This paper first reviews the historical and realistic background of the rise of environmental governance,clarifies the basic definition and characteristics of environmental governance,details the three core elements of governance,institution,rules and actors,and compares different environmental governance modes briefly.Then,based on a systematic literature review of data from Web of Science core collection,the author depicts a panorama of overseas study of Chinese environmental governance and carries on the comprehensive analysis,including the basic descriptive statistics and the thematic analysis on the framework of governance actors.In the fourth part,this paper discusses the main findings,ranging from the regime and environmental performance,the market participants involved in environmental governance,social participation in environmental governance,China's participation in global environmental governance.Focusing on the inconsistences between the main findings,the author briefly summarizes the characteristics of overseas Chinese environmental governance research.Last but not the least,this paper puts forward some pertinent thinking and suggestions from three aspects:feasible options for environmental governance in China,constructing Chinese academic discourse system,carrying out environmental public diplomacy and improving China's environmental image. |
