Yanqing County,Beijing,as a typical example of the crustal movement in northern China, owns landscapes shaped by the geological movements and a large number of cultural heritage sites.Yanqing Geopark is characterized by its unique geoheritage resources as the main part, and the cultural heritage resources, comosed of two connecting scenic areas and two geotrails, which perfectly demonstrate its natural and cultural value. The eternal mystery of Guyaju(ancient dwelling site)in the west geotrail attracts many visitors with its unique architecture and its mysterious origin; The Badaling Great Wall in the east geotrail, due to its grand construction and rich cultural connotation is well known by visitors all over the world. However, the implication of geological knowledge in these famous cultural sites is often neglected. How did the ancient people select the hill on which they would make dwellings? Why did the Ming emperors decide to build the Great Wall along those mountain ridges? In addition to their specific eras, geological factors contributed much more than expected in these matters.Geoheritage protection is the foundation to exploring mysteries of the Earth,Yanqing’s unique location advantage paves the way for the development of geotourism. The characteristic mode with perfect combination between cultural relics and geoheritage expands its space to geotourism development in Yanqing geopark. From the perspective of protecting geoheritage, the geotourism development is benefical for geoheritage protection. This paper focuses on the discussion about the geotourism value in Guyaju and the Badaling Great Wall. The architecture and geoscientific value of Guyaju and Badaling Great Wall is analysed in terms of culture background and geological connotation. This paper studies the granite characteristics in Guyaju site and lithological features of Badaling Great Wall’s base rock-the Badaling melange.Compared with a perfect example of combination between cultural heritage geoheritage in Mount Taishan Global Geopark, this paper deals with the topic of how to explore the geotourism value in cultural heritage sites, and how to combine cultural with geological knowledge,it provides a new mode to develop the geotourism in Yanqing geopark.
