For a long time, China’s manufacturing companies are majorly production-based and their growth largely depends on high pollution, high energy consumption, low labor efficiency and low added value. As such, China’s manufacturing companies are in urgent need of transformation from production-based to service-based, which will sustain the future development. This thesis explains at length the basic theories of service-based manufacturing and the factors that shape service-based manufacturing, reclassifying the service models by value chain theory. By adopting the Theory of Constraints, the thesis explores the core difficulties that obstruct manufacturing companies from becoming service-based and suggests some solution by using the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. The theories (TOC and TRIZ) in the thesis are further dealt with and validated by the true cases that happen within Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group on its transition to become a service-oriented manufacturer.
