China’s demand for energy resources has soared with its robust and steady economic growth in recent years. Australia, as a country with great endowment of energy resources, is one of the ideal exporters for China. The two countries have conducted extensive and intensive cooperation in the realm of bilateral trade and investment in the resources sector.The present study explores the bilateral cooperation between China and Australia in areas of coal trade and investment, summarizes key trends and features based on historical track records, and provides strategic initiatives to enhance the mutually beneficial relationship in coal trade and investment. The thesis has invoked viewpoints from government bodies, academic and industry research institutions, industry experts and media reports etc. to formulate a multi-perspective analysis into the bilateral coal trade and investment relationship, alongside with typical case studies to elaborate the key issues.This thesis consists of five chapters:the first one as an introduction, followed by the main body from chapter two to chapter four, and lastly chapter five as the conclusion of the whole paper.Chapter One introduces the issues to be explored with related literature review, and the significance, objectives and methodology of the study.Chapter Two defines different types of coals and provides a basic overview of the coal sector in both China and Australia.Chapter Three commences with a review of China-Australia coal trade, with summarization of the key features. An outline of the challenges confronting the two countries is presented thereafter, with proposed strategic initiatives to address the problems.Chapter Four first reviews China-Australia coal investment, with thorough examination of the characteristics of investment themes and analysis into a case study of the best demonstrated investment. Then it elaborates the factors/hurdles affecting China’s investment into Australia and provides a recommendation package of proposed strategic initiatives to deepen the investment relationship.Chapter Five outlines the comprehensive big picture and highlights the concluding remarks of the whole paper.
