With the development of technology and the complexity of projects, the request of various stakeholders on the quality, cost and schedule of projects become higher and higher and projects show integrated, scaled and variety of financing. At the same time, project management has been greatly developed and methods and tools of project management have emerged a lot. The goal of the project process management is to control project completion time and improve project benefit.On the basis of the analysis of traditional project schedule management theories, this paper parses their advantages and disadvantages in project schedule management. Then, the thesis introduces the critical chain method which is based on the theory of constraints and its advantage could make up other theories and methods. With resource constraints considered, the critical chain method has its unique advantages, and meets the needs for tools and methods of project progress management.Combining the concrete case, this thesis analyses the factors affecting the project schedule objectives, and puts forward such problems as the lack of system, too much safety time, and a lack of buffer mechanism. This paper points out the causes of the problem, such as not aware of the importance of process management, not perfect in schedule management plan method, the inadequacy in coordination, human’s behaviors and the limitations of critical resources in project. The work above provides foundation for the application of critical chain method.Based on the critical chain method application premise and steps, this thesis analyses problems such as when and how to obtain and use key resources. The author deliberates planning and implementation of project progress and illustrates project management and control by buffering administration. The effect of critical chain method is evaluated, and its effectiveness in desulphurization project in Dezhou is demonstrated with the actual effects. This paper can provide theoretical and practical reference to the use of the critical chain method for other enterprises in engineering project management industry to guide their projects.
