Jinghang Grand Canal is a geographical indication as well as a kind of culturalsymbols. It runs through several provinces and cities as Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei,Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang provinces, and so on. Stretching nearly2000kilometers,it is an important channel for political, economic and cultural communication in ancientChina, which created abundant tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Politically, theBeijing Hangzhou Grand Canal not only provides security for consolidation andreinforcement of Chinese feudal dynasty’s regime, but improve the political status ofLiaocheng, Linqing, Dezhou, Tianjin, Huaian, Tongzhou, along the canal. Economically, itis the flow and transport of the canal that brings merchants and logistics together, makingLiaocheng developing rapidly in Ming and Qing Dynasties as the important businesshub, harbor wharf and logistics center. From the culture and customs, cultures of Qilu, YanZhao, Wu Yue, Chuan Chu Interpenetrate and integrate through the canal, causing thediversity and richness of folk custom of liaocheng. In this article, I choose Liaocheng, thecanal city, In its Ming and Qing Dynasty, as the research object, to explore the influenceof changes in canal traffic, transport, commercial civilization on the development ofLiaocheng.Through the analysis and study on the commercial culture, folkbelief, city structure, block layout population change and other aspects, I will reveal thehistorical rules and essential characteristics of the rise and fall of LiaochengThe article is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I discuss the relationship,between the canal and the historical changes of Liaocheng city, and focus on thegeographical location natural environment, history, ransportation andcity change problems, to grasp the origin and change of Liaocheng city from the whole andto explains the relationship between city development and the canal. In the second chapter,I describes the commercial development of Liaocheng during the Ming and QingDynasties, including business development background, development path, themain industry, merchants and the operational characteristics to reproduce the grandoccasion of commercial prosperity there. In the third chapter, I discusses the commercialinfluences on its spatial structure changes, including the overall layout of the city, theconstruction of public facilities, commercial facilities, educational facilities and spaceexpansion. Through the analysis of the various facilities, town distribution and cause of formation, the article will reveal the impact of commercial development on the layout ofthe of city space. In the fourth chapter, I discuss the influence of business developmenton the city’s population and life in aspects of population, populationorigin, employment, living conditions etc.Finally, I summarize the relationship between thebusiness development and the city. The canal dredging in Liaocheng promotesthe commercial prosperity and brings commercial development.Through analyzing spatialstructure and population changes, the article reveals how Liaocheng changed from theimportant military town to a commercial city and how it developed from asingle "town" to "city", then to a comprehensive "city".Based on the previous research, I fully explore, collect and analyze relevant historicaldocuments, from the city history and social history point of view, and docomparative, comprehensive research on the relationship between the canal andthe system Liaocheng. The library of Liaocheng University, the canal literaturedatabase, ChinaHowNet, Wan Fang and the online ancient books library, providesthe necessary information for this paper. In addition, in this paper, combining the spotinvestigation, I sum up the typical case, using the method of interview to collect somedata, image text information and analysis carefully, and quote them in the article, thus forma complete chain data.
