Wireless sensor network is used to monitor and collect the information of objects in various environments, send data to users after processing. It has many advantages such as high precision, good flexibility and has extensive application value. Wireless sensor network is usually charged by batteries and can not be changed any more, so how to use energy efficiently and prolong the lifetime of the network becomes the key problem in the development of this technology. Therefore, this paper proposes solution for thie problem of excessive energy consumption from routing protocol and data compression respectively. The paper studies the architecture, characteristic and energy-consumption problem in wireless sensor networks, studies the key technology for energy-saving, including routing protocol and data compression, focus on some classical routing protocol and their improved algorithms and common data compression algorithms in wireless sensor networks.Specific to the routing protocol, a scheme of energy efficient layered routing protocol is proposed, the scheme involves the best radius of the cluster, the selection of the cluster head and the transmission mode of the cluster head. Proposed the derivation of the best radius expression, then takes the location and the rest energy of the head node into consideration by using a uniform clustering method, this balanced the energy consumption of the network well. Proposed the basis of transmission mode selection of cluster head and the method of middle node selection in multiple hop transmission.Specific to data compression, two schemes base on temporal correlation are proposed, first one is the scheme based on linear regression and the second is the scheme based on the threshold of vector product. The first scheme compresses the data sectionally by using least square method, replaces the original data with regression parameters in the range of maximum error, the second scheme controls the compression error by the sum of the vector product of ordered data points, deletes the redundancy data points, this scheme has a higher execution efficiency.
