Sand ripples and dunes are the most basic landform in desert, and getting their geometric information is very important for understanding and managing desertification. According to the characteristics of complex and changeable environment in the desert landscape, explore and discuss the method of obtaining information of desert landform by using computer image processing technology is the aim of this paper. The contents of this paper are as following.Firstly, this paper introduces research progress and present situation of sand ripples and dunes, also explains research background and fundamental of image processing technology. Then, according to the landform characteristics of desert, we carry out research of practicability in image processing method. For sand ripples, combined with previous studies and edge detection principle, put forward a way that can extract both ridges and valleys, reliability of this method is analyzed. Study on the strategy provides a reliable way of sand ripples’ geometry evolution. In addition, conduct a feasibility study on the application of binocular stereo vision imaging technology of dunes. Mainly including corner point extraction of the image templates, binocular camera calibration and binocular image matching method, the article analyzes the image processing technology on geomorphic information of dunes, put forward a feasible method which can collect 3D information of dunes. Finally, concludes with a summary of the main work of this paper, and looks forward to the future system improvements, provide a reference solution for acquisition of aeolian landform information for later research by image processing technology.
