The accelerated construction of large coal storage base needs the guarantee of modern management technology. And the inventory of bulk commodities such as coal is an important link. Quickly, accurately and simply measuring the volume and quality of coal wall is important for scientific management, economic benefit evaluation and assessment of storage capacity in coal base, and it has significant application value.This topic is derived from the scientific research project "The research of inventory system for bulk commodities such as coal" of Shenhua Group. According to the quick, accurate and simple requirements of project, the system just need people take the terminal measurement device to walk around the measured coal wall, then the volume of the coal wall can be measured. This paper mainly focus on the whole design of the system, the design and implementation of data acquisition software, test and verification of the completed software.The system utilizes two-dimensional laser scanner to acquire the laser cloud information of the bulk commodities, uses two groups (one group includes two cameras) of visible light cameras to collect the visible light information of bulk stockpile, gathers portable measurement terminal’s azimuth angle information by electronic compass, collects the pitch angle and roll angle information of portable measurement terminal by tilt angle sensor, obtains the accurate location information of portable measurement terminal by GPS locating module, and employs the 3G network to ensure the GPS system is in RTK model (Real-time kinematic); Besides, the micro thermal printer can print the volume results.The data collection software of the system mainly includes base station initialization module, base station data collection module, portable measurement terminal initialization module, portable measurement terminal working model selection module, portable measurement terminal data collection module, portable measurement terminal data transmission module and platform data analysis, calculation and transmission module. As for data collection software’s realization, the software exploitation environment, software’s input and output interfaces and software function are mainly focused on. and then software structure and every module’s flows are designed. Finally, use MSComm controls to achieve serial communication and use Winsock to complete network communications. After the development, a lot of tests are conducted,and measure practical coal piles in Huanghua port, Cangzhou, Hebei Province. The result demonstrate this system design is accurate and the software is reliable.
