With the development of embedded system, SoPC (System-on-a-Programmable-Chip) has been the development trend of embedded system and the functional demand of SoPC is becoming higher. On the basis of existing platform, the SoPCs designed based on one chip resources can not meet the needs. Thus, extending SoPC bus protocol across the chip to achieve more off-chip resources has important significance in the development trend of SoPC.This paper studies the extension of SoPC bus protocol across the chip. By researching and analyzing the development status of communication mechanism across chip, the basic principles of AXI (Advanced eXtensible Interface) bus protocol, the feature of parallel and serial communication interface, the system of extending SoPC bus protocol across the chip is designed and implemented. The architecture of the bus extension SoPC is shown in this paper and the design of customized AOC (AXI Over Chip) IP modules is described in detail. The local SoPC and remote SoPC are built based on Xilinx ZYNQ-7000 FPGA chip and Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA chip. Local SoPC can access the peripheral resources on remote SoPC by using AOC IP. In addition, both parallel and serial communication methods are used to transmit data between chips. Based on these two communication methods, the performance of bus extension SoPC is tested and analysed. AOC IP is the critical part of this design and it is programmed in Verilog HDL. In the end, the design of extending SoPC bus protocol across the chip is validated on ZC706 and VC707 development board.The design of extending SoPC bus protocol across the chip can reduce design costs and improve the resource utilization, performance, scalability of system, and has important engineering significance in designing more complicated SoPC.
