In recent years, with the rapid development of microelectronics technology, the development level of infrared imaging system is also increasing. Infrared radiation can work at night and in bad weather conditions. As it has the advantage of long detection distance, good concealment and anti-disturbance, the infrared technology has been widely applied in many fields of civil and military. The extensive application of infrared imaging system also highlights the importance of assessing the performance of the system. This paper analyzes the factors that influence the evaluation of the performance of the infrared imaging system, including infrared radiation characteristic of target and background, infrared imaging system performance, and the influence of atmosphere on infrared radiation transmission. Among them, the influence of atmosphere is the most complicated and is also the most difficult to deal with. In this paper, through the analysis of MODTRAN software proved that MODTRAN is convenient and has high precision in the calculation of atmospheric transmittance. It is identified that using MODTRAN to calculate atmospheric is feasible. The data of atmospheric transmittance are calculated by MODTRAN. These data are picked up to research the influence on atmospheric transmittance in different condition, such as atmospheric components, altitude, zenith angle, fog, haze.In this paper, the MRTD of the Catherine-GP is estimated by programming. The results showed the feasibility of the model and ensured the accuracy of distance prediction. A model is established to estimate the operating distance of infrared imaging system based on MRTD. In this model the effect of the level of observation, the actual target size, the probability of detection and the actual background temperature are taken into account. The atmospheric transmittance data of certain conditions calculated by MODTRAN software are extracted and brought into the calculation model to estimate the MRTD and the operating distance of infrared imaging system. The influence and reasons of different conditions on the MRTD and the operating range of infrared imaging system are analysed, such as different detection path(horizontal path and slant path), visibility, humidity, zenith angle.
