Operating distance as a primary parameter of infrared search system is the important basis for the system design. The main content of this article is shown as follow, firstly calculates the infrared radiation intensity of flying objects with different attitudes on the basis of the theories of blackbody radiation; secondly represents the atmospheric transmittance of radiating targets in different attitudes in response to the influence of vapor and carbondioxide in the atmosphere; then computes the operating distance of point source infrared system and array infrared detector with the limitation of detector noise according to the comprehensive analysis of the performance of detector, the SNR and the transmittance of optical system; at last this article writes an application program which can describe the relationship between the operating distances and attitudes to calculate the operating distance of a radiating target under different attitudes, atmosphere situations and optical systems. The final result of this article will be helpful to compute the operating distance of an infrared search system easily and quickly.
