Based on radar technology and system simulation technology, the radar target simulator is mainly used to simulate the information of radar target and environment. Now it has been widely used in performance testing of the radar receiving subsystem and the whole system within the result of greatly reducing development cost and shortening the development cycle of radar. The radar targer simulation technology has penetrated in all stages of development, debugging and using of radar. Relying on the development of a pulse doppler radar, this paper designs a portable radar target simulator based on FPGA.Firstly, we study the simulation method and the target echo model, then analyse the implement methods of echo information such as amplitude, delay and the doppler frequency shifting. We design the basic architecture of the simulator based on digital radio frequency memory(DRFM) and the CPCI bus. It’s consisted with a microwave link unit, a baseband signal processing unit and a computer control unit. Then we anslyse the function of each unit and the working principle of the system. Based on the parallel processing ability and operation ability of FPGA, and the system modeling tool of System Generator, we design and realize orthogonal mixing, filtering, decimation, doppler and delay modulation, interpolation, IQ modulation and so on.Secondly, we complete the designing of two boards based on FPGA called microwave control and operation panel. The microwave control board is mainly used for communication, and controling the microwave devices in real-time. The operation panel board realizes the startup and shutdown of the CPCI chassis, and the normal work of the system and so on. In addition, we give the timing simulation and verification with simulation tools such as modelsim.Finally, we debug the key interface of the system, then we test and analyse the function and indication of the simulator by using signal sources, spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope. The result shows that the design scheme is feasible, and achieve the desired indicators.
