With the rapid development of the international logistics industry, the growth of China’s imports and exports result in speedy progress of port logistics. To handle large quantities of new growth of container goods in port, some terminal operators have to take some measures, like the expansion of port area. However, the rising cost of land makes it impossible. Hence, to improve the productivity of container handling in the present terminal area, terminal operators may purchase more equipment, such as ship to shore cranes and vehicles, but the price is so high that this method is still not applicable. In order to make Shanghai Port maintain its advantages in the increasingly competitive international shipping and port market, it appears imminent to develop an effective, efficient and practical Container Terminal Operating Management System. This thesis is written based on the exiting Container Terminal Operating Management System in Shanghai Port. First of all, the handling processes and needs analysis at all Shanghai container terminals are researched. Then a new advanced system is designed and realized. This thesis is divided into three parts.Firstly, this article discusses the historical data, status quo and development prospect of Shanghai Port, and concludes that it is necessary to update the operating system. Then, needs analysis is done and illustrated in detail by flow chart, use case diagram, etc.In the second part, based on the needs analysis above, the system is designed in details, including the overall effect diagram and the design of each part.At the end of the thesis, it gives a brief introduction of the practical applications of this system on site, and the suggestions for its further optimization and improvement are also made. For now, the system has been put into formal operation in Shanghai Port Container Terminals. It can meet the requirements of container terminal business, and decrease personnel and operational costs considerably, too. Besides, what is worth mentioning is that the algorithm of yard cranes scheduling is redesigned so successfully that the productivity of whole port is significantly enhanced.
